I Am Thinking Spring ... It's March 5th and it's our third snow in as many weeks. A few weeks back, when the temps were hovering in the low 60's, I really thought that we were going to have an early spring. I even was able to work outside and build a new shooting bench for the farm. Oh well, so much for getting an early start on spring ... That said, I guess we can't really complain about this winter, for the most part, the temps have been mild and the snow falls have been few.
I know it won't be long and the temps will be warming, the snow will melting and soon it will be time to get out and enjoy the spring. Mushroom hunting, range shooting and fishing trips to the Spoon & Mississippi are not far off. I am really looking forward to the fishing this year. It is my intent to fish the Spoon and Mississippi frequently this spring & summer. Over the winter I bought a really nice 5hp Mercury 2 stroke with both an internal and external fuel tank set up. This will be great for use on the Spoon with my 12ft river jon. Last year, with drought and low water, the wife and I did quite a bit of fishing from the shore of the Spoon. Even though the water was low and the fishing was from the shore, in half dozen or so outings, we caught over 50 nice channel cat. Hopefully this year will see more water in the river and give us plenty of opportunities to use the new boat & motor.
We also are planning to make many trips to the Mississippi River this year. We both really enjoy fishing the Mississippi. If everything works out, we are planning on buying a new fishing barge this year. The older I get, the harder it is to spend hours upon hours fishing out of the 16ft jon. I have seen more and more of the pontoon fishing pontoons show up on the river each year and they definitely look like they would be just the ticket for spending many hours on the water. I am thinking at least a 21ft or 23ft fishing barge with a 60 to 90hp motor. There would be fishing and seating, from the bow, amidship and the stern. It will also be nice to have an awning for shade and some comfortable padded seats. At 21 to 23 ft there should be plenty of room to get up and stretch your legs.
I think with a rig like that there would be plenty of room for the wife, the dog , the grandkids and plenty of gear. The 90hp motor should speedily get us up and down the river to our favorite spots... It is my hope that we will have purchased one and have it ready to go by mid April ... Yep I am definitely thinking spring! More Later - JR
